A quotation is the repetition of one expression as part of another one, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed (as by citation) to its original source, and it is indicated by (punctuated with) quotation marks.

A quotation can also refer to the repeated use of units of any other form of expression, especially parts of artistic works: elements of a painting, scenes from a movie or sections from a musical composition.

The rest of this article addresses only written or oral quotations.

Reasons for using quotations

Quotations are used for a variety of reasons: to illuminate the meaning or to support the arguments of the work in which it is being quoted, or to provide direct information about the work being quoted (whether in order to discuss it, positively or negatively, to pay homage to the original work or author, to make the user of the quotation seem well-read). Quotations are also commonly printed as a means of inspiration and to invoke philosophical thoughts from the reader.

What are quotations called in a book when they serve to introduce the story?
Q. For example, many writers will select a quotation or two, possibly even a poem or song excerpt, before beginning a major part of their novel as a quasi introduction thereto, as a way of opening the story's theme in capsulized form. What is the proper name for this process, or for these selected quotations?

A. They're called epigraphs. An epigraph is a quotation that is placed at the start of a work or section that expresses in some succinct way an aspect or theme of what is to follow.

How to cite quotations from the Epic of Gilgamesh in a research paper.?
Q. I'm doing a paper on the Epic of Gilgamesh and I have no idea how to cite it! Since it's written on tablets and the tablets are in columns do you have to put the tablet number, column number, and page number or do you just use the standard MLA format for all poetry of just the page number. I'm so confused!

A. A citation format depends entirely on the professor. If she wants MLA, give her MLA. If she has not specified, then it may not matter which format you use, as long as you are consistant. Whatever you do for the first cite, do for every cite.

How important is it to do follow ups of quotations and what are the main quesions to ask customers?
Q. I am a teleseller and looking forward to giving myself more options in sales in terms of open questions in order to attract their attention and make a buying decision. Thank you!

A. Ye it is very important to follow-up enquiries from customers. Give it a couple of days and ring them and ask them if they received your quote and if there is any more information that they might need from you, or any questions they have. That way, they won't feel too pressurised as you have rung to see if they want any more information to make up their mind. Be friendly. DON'T use their first name unless you are invited to - be polite, call them 'Mr' or 'Mrs' as it is a mark of respect - you don't want to be over-familiar with them. If they don't want any other information, but still haven't accepted your quotation, then ask them what is the single most important factor for them in deciding which quote to accept. It may be price, it… [cont.]
