A quotation is the repetition of two expressions as part of another one, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed (as by citation) to its original source, and it is indicated by (punctuated with) quotation marks.

A quotation can also refer to the repeated use of units of any other form of expression, especially parts of artistic works: elements of a painting, scenes from a movie or sections from a musical composition.

The rest of this article addresses only written or oral quotations.

Reasons for using quotations

Quotations are used for a variety of reasons: to illuminate the meaning or to support the arguments of the work in which it is being quoted, or to provide direct information about the work being quoted (whether in order to discuss it, positively or negatively, to pay homage to the original work or author, to make the user of the quotation seem well-read). Quotations are also commonly printed as a means of inspiration and to invoke philosophical thoughts from the reader.

A. You italicize the names of works of art. It is also acceptable to italicize a series of works.

When a letter is shown in books, does the writer put it in quotations?
Q. When a character isn't reading a letter out loud, and someone is reading the letter to themselves, how is it distinguished? Is it italicized or put in quotations?
Asked by Marie - Fri Mar 13 15:47:35 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. However the author wants. That's the beauty of the craft. However, quotes would indicate being read outloud. I have seen such things as inner thoughts and reading to one's self handled in a number of ways including: single quotes, italics, different font (often a handwriting font so the text itself looks like a letter, like you read the actual letter yourself instead of listening to the character read it), having the character think to the audience "I read the letter silently to myself" (so we knew it was silent no matter how it was formatted), and special formatting (literally setting the letter apart on the page, such as one line white space above and below and indented on both sides, switching to single-spacing, etc.) It's up to you.
