A. If I want a quote, I usually go into a search engine and type (for example) H.G. Wells, Time Machine, quotes Or...if you know the quote, but nothing else. Put the quote in the search. Trust me. You'll find what you need. It's almost as if it works like magic.

How would I cite a quotation that is a bulleted list using APA style?
Q. I am writing a psychology paper. I understand how to cite normal quotations, but cannot find a reference on how I would cite a quotation that is in a bulleted list format. This has also stumped my psychology professor who told me to figure it out for the final draft of my paper. Any help would be appreciated! I would love if you had a reference to direct me to. THANKS!!

A. There is much that is unsaid about bulleted lists in APA. However I would use the guidance under Section 5.13 Quotations (p.293 APA manual), which states that "other punctuation" should be left in the quotations marks if it is part of the quoted material. And quoted material should be verbatim (p.117), so that would imply we should not remove bullet points, which were the intention of the original author. As for presentation, what else can you do but use the block quote format? And if it is for publication in an APA journal, they would prefer the bullet point to be flush left within the block, including any second line of text, in a similar fashion to numbered lists (p.292), which are an approved format. This is to make it easier for the… [cont.]

Is it legal to use a famous quotation in a film if the author has died?
Q. Can quotations be 'copyrighted' or are they in the public domain? Would it be ok to base a short film on a famous quotation?
Asked by clark - Wed Jan 7 13:58:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Quotations -- when not in the public domain, i.e., very old or never protected by copyright--are in copyright, but when used sparingly and with proper credit, may be cited. However, permission still needs to be obtained from the copyright owner, the estate of the copyright owner, or the publisher. When an excerpt from >>any<< song or poem in copyright is quoted, frequently a fee needs to be paid. Titles are not copyrighted, but they may be be registered as trademarks or service marks, and a fee may be demanded by the owner. Basing a short film on a famous quotation would be okay, provided the quotation is not in copyright. So, for instance, you can't base a short film on Irving Berlin's line, "In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills… [cont.]

Q. For example, many writers will select a quotation or two, possibly even a poem or song excerpt, before beginning a major part of their novel as a quasi introduction thereto, as a way of opening the story's theme in capsulized form. What is the proper name for this process, or for these selected quotations?

What is the correct way to use quotations?
Q. At the end of the quotation would you go... "Of course not.", she said. (A period after the quotation mark?) Do you have to start a new line at every quotation and indent it? Example... He then asked her if she thought that coffee was gross. "Of course not.", she answered. Any other rules would help be chosen as best answer, thanks!
Asked by kris - Sat Jan 26 21:11:54 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, never use double punctuation. And the comma goes inside of parenthesis. "Of course not!" she said "Of course not," she said. Also, if you have a really long quote that's more than a paragraph, you start the quote with a quotation mark every line but don't close until the quote's over. "For example the quote starts here and continues on and on etc "And the quote keeps continuing into the next paragraph but now it's over." "If it's the end of the entire sentence, always punctuate inside of the quote."

A. Stressed, the answerer above got in before me as I was going to say the same. You must use the source you have personally seen - nothing would be worse than quoting a source you have not read directly in the rare chance that it was incorrectly quoted etc. - Referencing is a pain in the neck but the sources always seem to stick in your mind this way.

Q. When you use quotation marks your supposed to start a new line and indent, right? And when you change speakers you do the same. But what if you dont change speakers and you continue in the same paragraph and three lines later the same person speaks. Do you continue in the same paragraph or go to the next line?

A. The way I do it is:- blah blah blah blah...and then he said:- Indent (italics) "blah blah blah.". (full stop here if it ends the sentence, if the sentence continues after the quote, start a new paragraph with a lower case first letter) If it the same person that speaks, without changing speakers, I still start a new paragraph. It just makes it easier to read the quotations. So... David and I were talking about sheep and then he said:- Indent (italics) "Sheep are white." and I agreed with him. Later on, we were talking about cows and David said:- Indent (italics) "Cows are usually black and white." which I also agreed with. Julia joined the conversation and said:- Indent (italics) "Cows are sometimes brown as well.". That was… [cont.]

How do you cite a quotation that is not from a text?
Q. I need to quote something in my paper, but I'm not sure how. I know how to cite things from a text, but the one I need to cite was probably spoken. It might be from a text, but I don't have it anyway; I just got the quote off the internet. This is the quotation: What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness god has given us in this world... ~Robert E. Lee How do I cite this?

A. Cite the quotation as being from the website where you found it. All forms of citing sources for a paper (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) have guidelines for citing Internet sources. If you're not comfortable with that, then you should probably do more research and find a scholarly source that contains the quote you want to use.

When do you underline and use quotations when refrencing book titles and chapters within a book?
Q. I am writing a report on Allen Ginsberg, and I am talking about his book, "Allen Ginsberg, Collected Poems 1947-1980" and I also reference a chapter within the book entitled: "The Fall of America." Do I use quotations for both titles? Do I underline one, use italics? I also analyze specific poems such as Kaddish (which I underlined in the essay), should I underline it, put it in italics, or use quotations?
Asked by Ajosthan - Thu Mar 19 13:28:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Works cited: Using MLA guidelines, you elect whether to use the chapter or the poem title. Either will be in quotations. Thus your works cited reference will include in order: *Last name, first name (author), followed by a period and a space *Name of chapter, poem, OR essay followed by a period, in quotation marks *Title of book in italics (underline if italics not available), followed by a period and a space *City of publication, followed by a colon and a space *Name of publisher, followed by a comma and a space *Year of publication, followed by a period. Yahoo! Answers does not permit me to show the correct format; thus, please see: [See Citing a chapter, poem, or essay from a book or anthology] NOTE 1. IN-Text citation:… [cont.]

A. hey im on the speech and debate team too usually in impromptu you are given a choice of a quote, a word and a statistic if you have trouble with quotes than dont pick them id say your best bet is to do whatever to relate the quote to your own life and quotes mean something different to each person so you can say whatever you want and pretty much get away with it

In chapter four when Lennie comes into his room he says 'I can't play cards 'cos I'm black'. That is alination and discrimination too.
