How to add a possessive punctuation mark in javascript code for a google map description marker?
Q. Hi. I have been adding customized markers to a google map on my website, in the marker description I need to have a word with a possessive case punctuation. What is the right combination of quotes brackets to achieve this. Adding my single ' quote possessive punctuation mark screws up the whole thing and gives me an error.

Why does the French language put spaces before their ending punctuation mark?
Q. I don't know if it's just the French language, but they always seem to put a space before the ending punctuation mark (periods, exclamation marks, question marks) Is there a reason for that? Would it be wrong to write French without the space at the end?
Asked by Larkyn - Mon Sep 22 01:23:44 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The rule is the same as in English. You don't need to put a space before any ending ponctuation mark. Someones do that only because they think it's more clear.

A. That mark is an apostrophe. It means something has been left out--in this case the "i" in "is." it's = it is its = of it The apostrophe is not a punctuation mark. How many punctuation marks are there? About a dozen-- . , ? ! " ' ; : ( ) [ ] / There is one I can't make--a question mark superimposed on an exclamation point, called an interrobang. It never took off, though. period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark (or point), double quote, single quote, semi-colon, colon, parentheses, brackets, shill or virgule or slash - = hyphen -- = em dash What else?

A. Officially, the US Board of Geographic Names does not recognize ANY punctuation marks in placenames. So, for example, Hawai'i becomes Hawaii, St. Louis becomes St Louis (or Saint Louis), Watling's Island becomes Watlings Island, and so on. The reason is that punctuation marks on maps often look like something else, like a well, a benchmark, or a town.

A. Comma. "In the immortal words of [someone]" is a prepositional phrase, and if you're going to put anything after it, you'd put a comma. (Many writers, though, eschew the comma.)

What Punctuation Mark Would Be Correct?
Q. I'm writing something, but I'm not sure what punctuation mark to use for this: "For example, there were signs that said, No Chinese or dogs allowed. Discrimination ??? everywhere." I'm trying to say "there was discrimination everywhere" but only with the two main words. Would I use a double dash as in "Discrimination--everywhe re."? I played around with it, and decided that an ellipsis (3 or 4 dots) fits it best. Thanks, people.

A. The comma is right; appositives take a comma. Anything more makes heavy going of a simple little sentence. A dash or colon would be kosher, but they would be too dramatic here. A semicolon would be wrong because this is not what semicolons are for.
