If an author uses a quotation that I wish to use, can I reference the quotation directly from its source?
Q. So if I am reading a book and the author quotes J Smith as saying "xxx", if I use the same quotation in my work can I reference it straight to J Smith or do I have to acknoweldge the author of the book in which I found the quotation. I am am undergraduate at university. PS I hope this makes sense, just cannot find any guidelines in the handbook on plaigarism about this!

A. Stressed, the answerer above got in before me as I was going to say the same. You must use the source you have personally seen - nothing would be worse than quoting a source you have not read directly in the rare chance that it was incorrectly quoted etc. - Referencing is a pain in the neck but the sources always seem to stick in your mind this way.
