What is the standard time period used when futures contracts are quoted?
Q. For example, oil futures are quoted at 89.5, which is also around the actual price of oil right now. Is the price quoted for the futures contract just the price of the commodity right now, or is it for a future date, and if so what is the time period used for a standard future?
Asked by eric0598 - Wed Dec 12 01:17:18 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The spot price may be significantly different than the futures price, and depends on many things, including the grade of oil and the point of delivery. The futures contract is standardized for one particular grade and point of delivery. The front-month oil contract is currently for January delivery. Oil has a futures contract for each month, for the next 12 months. The standard time period for each futures contract is 30 days. In general, individuals are interested only in speculating on the price change of oil, and not interested in taking delivery, nor would we know what to do with 1,000 bbl of oil. As such, time is relatively unimportant. Producers of oil and refineries use the oil futures to lock in a delivery price at some… [cont.]

Jesus often quoted scripture, but what exactly was considered scripture in His day?
Q. We know about the first 5 books of the bible, but He also quoted prophets. Were certain prophetic books considered part of Jewish scripture in those days? Were they considered as important as the first 5 books?

A. All of the quotes that Jesus made come from a Greek translation of the Torah called the Septaigant. In included all the books of the Hebrew scriptures (which are the same as the 39 books of the Protestant Old Testament) plus nine small books or additions to Daniel and Esther that are only found in this Greek translation and included in the Catholic Old Testament. It is unclear whether Jesus actually quoted from the Greek Septaigant, or from the Hebrew version of the scriptures. There are no quotes by Jesus - or any New Testament author - from the 9 additional books of the Septaigant. What can I tell a customer if I quoted the wrong price on accident? ?
Q. I work in a business where I have to quote prices on jobs and I accidentally quoted the wrong price. Should I say anything or just take the loss?
Asked by Misti J - Thu Nov 6 18:53:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It comes down to how far off the quote was and how long the customer has been a customer. In our industry it happens that we get a custom quote for a job and either the quote itself was off, something was missing, or our multiplier (my fingers on a calculator) was off. In those circumstances the first thing I have to look at is how long the customer has been a customer. If it's a new customer, I may just eat it unless it's a below cost screw up. If it's an existing customer who knows I am not trying to bait and switch on them I am usually honest with them and they are generally pretty understanding. In one circumstance in particular I told the customer I messed up the price and forgot to ad a piece of the puzzle. The difference was… [cont.]

Q. i understand, that all of the companies have to produce their annual reports and comply with the Companies Act 2006 or IFRS (UK & Ireland) whilst doing it. What i need to find out is what are the rules regarding publishing those accounts between quoted and non-quoted companies in the UK and where exactly i can find this information. i tried london stock exchange web site and their rule book but unfortunately i could not find anything that would help me. thank you for all detailed answers.

A. I don't think a company has to publish its accounts or even need to have an annual report if it is unquoted. The quoted companies are traded and obviously investors should have access to the accounts. If the company is unquoted and therefore there is no public trade in their shares why should they be required to published their accounts? Unless of course they are seeking a listing

How do I compare stocks which are quoted on different exchanges?
Q. As an example, Prudential. Its FTSE100 quote last night was 700pence. Its NYSE quote was $27.63. Should it not be possible to convert between the two? If I take the FTSE quote and divide by 100 to get in s, then mutiply by (say 1.9) to get the equivalent in $, that's $13.3. Why such a huge difference? A. You may have one of two different problems. First the Prudentials in question may be two different companies. The one quoted on the London Stock Exchange is Prudential PLC, a London based insurance company. The one quoted on the nyse pru is Prudential Financial a U S company. To find the appropriate comparison, use the stock symbol PUK on the NYSE, which is the ADR that represents 2 Prudential PCL London shares. So if you compare PUK on the NYSE to PRU quoted on the London exchange and divide the PUK by two then you should arrive at the approximate London price after currency convervisons. An interesting side note. J P Morgan of the J P Morgan bank fame used to make a great deal of money buying and selling stocks on the NYSE and… [cont.]

When stressing that the good news is God s power for salvation to everyone having faith, Paul wrote the Christians in Rome: For in it God s righteousness is being revealed by reason of faith and toward faith, just as it is written: But the righteous one by means of faith he will live. Q. I understand how the velocity of a galaxy can be measured relative to another object or point in space but not aginst a constant like hubble flow. CMB itself is presumably moving at the speed of light like all radiation. In such cases is the velocity of a galaxy being measured against the Surface of Last Scattering as it recedes away from us?

A. No, it means "recessional velocity in the CMB rest frame," i.e. the recessional velocity as converted to a frame in which there is no Doppler shifting apparent in the CMB.
